Banana Republic is cleverly marketed to give the illusion of luxury where there is only basic, affordable work fashion

The American fashion chain Banana Republic will open its doors to the British public today at the launch of its first branch on this side of the Atlantic.

Known for its "preppy" but casual look, the flagship shop in London’s Regent Street is spread over 17,000 square ft and three floors.

The high-profile retail launch coincides with one of the most uncertain periods for the economies of both Britain and America in recent years.
